There is a lot to organise when your child starts school for the first time, or when they return to school after the school holidays.
The list seems endless, books, shoes, lunchbox, uniforms, lunch ideas... so much to get organised but we often overlook our child’s health and wellness at this time.
Starting or going back to school can be tough on our kids (as well as us parents), so having some natural solutions on hand for this time for concentration, focus, sleep and energy are needed more than ever.
Having essential oils as a regular part of your child’s daily routine can not only help their health, but can also help boost their cognitive performance.
Lucky for us, doTERRA makes it super easy to help our children manage their moods and emotions and boost their health with their new kids collection of pre-diluted roller bottles, formulated especially for our little ones.
Whether you are an experienced practitioner or new to essential oils, the dōTERRA Kids Collection is the complete and ready-made “whole body” essential oil toolbox designed to empower caregivers to confidently care for the health and wellness of little ones. Formulated specifically for developing minds, bodies, and emotions, these essential oil blends feature unique combinations therapeutically balanced to provide powerful benefits while being gentle on delicate skin.

Stronger™ - Use Stronger on the back of your neck or bottoms of your feet for an added boost of protection. This can be used on children in place of OnGuard essential oil blend. This blend is made with Litsea, Rose, Cedarwood and Frankincense.
Rescuer™ - After running, jumping and playing, rub Rescuer onto legs, feet or back to soothe your active body. This is a blend of Copaiba, Spearmint, Zanthoxylum and Lavender.
Steady™ - For those times when you feel nervous, rub Steady on your wrists and neck to calm and comfort your emotions. This blend is similar to the Balance blend. Steady is made up of Amyris, Balsam Fir and Coriander essential oils.
Brave™ - Before new of different situations, or just to start your day, roll Brave onto your tummy or bottoms of feet for a boost of courage and confidence. Oils in this blend are Amyris, Wild Orange, Cinnamon and Osmanthus.
These six roller bottles come in a carrying case with carabiner to clip onto a school bag as well as six silicone toppers with carabiners to clip the individual blends onto a bag. Also included are instructional flash cards for kids to read. For the littler ones who can’t yet read, they will begin to identify the symbol (mind, body or heart) and the colour for the blend that they wish to use.
This can also be a very emotional time for parents with little ones starting school for the first time, so there are oils to help you too! And for the teachers too.
Supporting healthy and happy children, families and classrooms starts with the morning routine.
When you are fying in an aeroplane the hostess recommends that in the event of an emergency the adult should put their oxygen mask on frst before they help their children. This should be your approach everyday, you need to be in a place to help your children. So that being said, start your day by waking before your children and get ready before you get them ready for the day.
Start your morning with a calm morning pick me up – something like Wild Orange and Lavender in the difuser is a great way to do this, or Balance and Lime is another grounding and uplifting option. If it is too difcult to put the difuser on each morning, just keep a spray bottle with your fav morning routine blend next to your bed and spray into the air to smell before you get out of bed or while you are getting ready.
To help wake sleepy heads, try an uplifting blend in the difuser or in a spray bottle and spray in their rooms. Try Lemon and Peppermint, or Wild Orange and Peppermint or my fav uplifting morning blend of Peppermint, Citrus Bliss and Lime. You could put this on in the living area of your home or near their bedrooms.
Before getting dressed use OnGuard or Steady from the kids collection as added protection. I keep a pre-diluted roller bottle handy (diluted with fractionated coconut oil) and rub into the soles of the feet before putting socks and shoes on. My kids love this routine as I give their feet a little massage as I rub it in.
Before heading out the door you can rub the divine focus blend (Vetiver, Lavender and Cedarwood) into their temples and wrist, or you could choose to use the InTune or Thinker focus blends. This sets them up with focus for a day of learning.
If you have a little one feeling nervous about the day ahead, especially those starting school for the first time, use the Brave roller bottle from the kids collection for a boost of courage and confidence. You can use this too mumma, if you need it too.
The evening routine is also important for healing busy minds relax and unwind.
For the working parents and teachers, the end of the work/school day can leave you feeling stressed and exhausted at times so the grounding blend, Balance (or Steady from the kids collection) can be great to inhale direct from the bottle or put a drop on your wrists and temples to help support you through the evening routine.
Later in the evening, add a drop of Bergamot, Lemon or Lavender in your favourite cup of herbal tea to help relax and relieve any stressors. Use a sleepy time blend like Roman Chamomile, Lavender and Frankincense in your difuser in your bedroom before going to bed to help you relax and switch of from the day.
For the children - the last thing they feel like doing is homework so after a healthy snack, a pep-up blend is just what you need in the difuser, something similar to what you would use to wake them up in the morning. Peppermint is always great for this as are the citrus oils or use the Thinker blend on their wrists and back of the neck before they sit down to complete their homework.
Once the homework is done and it is time to wind down, the best place to start is in the bath. Either dilute your choice of oils with Epsom salts (usually 2 cups, Epsom salts are not recommended for 6 years and under) or in a cup of milk to help disperse them through the water.
Oils to try in the bath are Lavender, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense, Balance – 2 drops should be enough. Mix and match or just use one oil – its up to you. Ask your children what they like.
For a detox bath and for smooth skin, add a small amount of coconut oil to your bath mix occasionally.
If you don’t have a bath in your home, place a few drops of oil in the corner of your shower and allow the hot water to run for a minute before the kids get in – gives a steam bath effect.
Once the bath-time routine is done, give your children a message into the soles of their feet. Not only is this a nice thing to do with your child, using oils like Lavender and Vetiver with fractionated coconut oil or the pre-diluted Calmer blend from the kids range will help them to relax and induce feelings of calmness and promote sleepiness.
Finally, add some oils to their difuser an hour before bed to promote a tranquil bedroom allowing deep sleep. Oils to use are Lavender, Lavender Peace (Serenity), Vetiver, Easy Air, Clary Sage, Frankincense and Balance. If you don’t have a difuser make up a spray bottle and spray the pillowcase and sheets.
