Did you know that you can make up a natural first aid kit using your essential oils? I’m not saying you need to ignore medical treatment completely as there is definitely a need for it and I am grateful for this but there are many cases where we can use our essential oils for general first aid and in place of many over the counter medications. Using essential oils doesn’t interfere with our body’s own immune responses and can help ease any discomfort we are feeling.

Essential oils are the perfect addition to our natural first aid kits for when illnesses or injuries are not life threatening. We are conditioned to head straight for the medicine cabinet when illness strikes so today I want to share with you the natural solutions you can turn to. It can take a while to adjust to a difference way of doing things but it is so much better for our bodies (and bank accounts).

Stocking your natural first aid kit is important so you have the oils on hand when you need them and you are familiar with which oils to use for what.

I am sharing the oils that I use in place of many items I used to use. Please note that I am not a doctor and am sharing this list for informational purposes only. Do not use these as a replacement when medical attention is needed.

Oils in my natural first aid kit:

Distilled from the Australian native Melaleuca alternifloria, tea tree is a very versatile oil and can be used topically to treat skin problems like fungus, blemishes, in grown hairs, cold sores. You can dab it on with a cotton pad on the affected area or apply topically diluted with Fractionated Coconut Oil. It can also be used for treating head lice.

The swiss army knife of essential oils, Lavender is a must have in your first aid kit. It is widely known for its calming and relaxing properties but is also antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Use it on bruises, cuts and irritated skin, mosquito bites, sunburn. Also great to help promote a restful sleep (say goodbye to those sleeping pills) or to relax and de-stress (add to your bath or put in a diffuser or simply inhale from the bottle). Use lavender and tea tree together to make your own baby wipes too.

Peppermint essential oil is perfect for improving focus and helps to stimulate the mind and increases mental alertness as well as helping to maintain concentration. It is also great to help cool the body, especially for fevers and high temperatures and combines really well with Lavender and Tea Tree to help in cooling and soothing sun burnt skin.

Frank is the king of oils! Not only does it aid in relaxation and is also an antiseptic and disinfectant, and helps to heal cuts and bug bites. Frankincense is regularly used by people who suffer from depression. It also helps inflammation, helps to boost immunity and cellular health and for increasing spiritual awareness.

Often referred to as a natural antibiotic, Oregano is perfect to have in your natural first aid kit for its natural antibacterial qualities, which is why it is used to help to fight colds and other sicknesses. It can be taken orally by putting a few drops on the tongue or take in a veggie capsule or you can apply it topically (make sure you dilute it with fractionated coconut oil as it is a hot oil).

Often used for its uplifting and energizing properties Lemon oil is perfect to clear your head and lift your mood. It is also great for detoxing the body and can be used topically on acne (remember to stay out of the sun for 12 hours after applying as it is photo sensitive – best applied at night time).

Ice Blue

This blend was specifically created by doTERRA to help ease muscle and joint pain. Use for lower back pain, sore joints and ligaments, after exercise to ease sore muscles. The relief is almost instant and a perfect addition to a natural first aid kit.

A must for your home. DigestZen is the internal blend – or I like to call the ‘Tummy Tamer’ blend. This blend is well known for its ability to aid in digestion, soothe occasional stomach upset, and maintain overall digestive health. This unique blend contains Ginger, Fennel, and Coriander to help ease occasional stomach discomfort, including motion sickness and indigestion, while Peppermint, Tarragon, Anise, and Caraway aid with digestion and help maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract. Perfect for easing motion sickness when travelling. A good replacement for heartburn and motion sickness tablets.

Easy Air

The Clear blend is great for the winter months to help ease congestion. This can be diffused or applied topically to the chest (with fractionated coconut oil of course). Easy Air is a proprietary blend including Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lemon, Ravensara, and Cardamom that can easily be applied topically to the chest, back, or bottom of feet. Its pleasant aroma creates a calming environment and is perfect for nighttime diffusion.

doTERRA On Guard, a proprietary essential oil blend, provides a natural and effective alternative for immune support. This blend protects against environmental and seasonal threats with essential oils known for their positive effects on the immune system when ingested. doTERRA On Guard can be taken internally on a daily basis to maintain healthy immune function and support healthy cardiovascular function. It can also be used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaner. When diffused, doTERRA On Guard helps purify the air, and can be very energizing and uplifting.

I have this in my handbag at all times.
