A lot of mums use and swear by Vicks when their child is sick. I did too – because back then I didn’t know better. I didn’t know there were other options for helping ease congestion in my kids. The packaging and marketing have us fooled in thinking that these are safe products to use on our children.

But on closer inspection to the ingredient list, Baby Rub by Vicks is made with Petrolatum – a toxic ingredient used in many hair care products, lip balms etc as it is a barrier to lock moisture in the skin – but this petrochemical can be contaminated with cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Plus it contains Fragrance – the term Fragrance can be used to mask undisclosed ingredients that are usually synthetic and chemicals that can have significant health effects on our bodies. “Fragrance” is considered a trade secret by law, so companies are not required to disclose the chemical components that add scent to a wide range of personal care products. According to the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database, an estimated 80% of products – everything from colognes and body sprays, to shampoos, deodorants, and even make-up – contain fragrance.

And this is marketed to us to use on our babies?

The only good ingredients on their list are the essential oils but I have to question those too – where are they sourced, how much is used in the rub, are they high quality and safe to use on babies and so on. Using essential oils in the mix suggests to me that Vicks knows how beneficial they are for helping us but the other ingredients are alarming.

If you have Vicks VapoRub in your medicine cabinet and are using it on a bubba under 2 you also may want to reconsider as it contains active ingredients, Camphor (which is highly toxic if ingested, especially for infants) and Menthol (which is what causes the airway inflammation) in it and a study show that using the ointment to ease coughing and congestion in children of this age (under 2) might lead to severe breathing problems by increasing mucus production and inflammation.

Don’t stress if you have used this. Many of us have, but now that you know better, look for natural alternatives. Question everything and READ the ingredients list.

Easy Air is like the natural version of vicks. Easy Air is a proprietary blend including Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lemon, Ravensara, and Cardamom that can easily be applied topically to the chest, back, or bottom of feet.

doTERRA oils are sourced where they grow best and their testing methods are incredible and they wont compromise quality – if an oil doesn’t meet their standards they will not sell it – you can track all of this at their website www.sourcetoyou.com(this website is full of loads of information about doTERRA’s commitment to providing us with the most pure, potent and effective oils on the earth).

Easy Air is super easy to use and a little bit goes a long way. When using topically on both adults and children you will dilute the oil with Fractionated Coconut Oil (or another carrier oil). One drop is often all you need to use. Rub this in to your child’s chest at night to help ease congestion.

You can also make your own Easy Air Chesty Rub – here is my super simple recipe:

Easy Air chest rub
½ cup coconut oil
2 tablespoons beeswax
20 drops easy air

Melt the beeswax and coconut oil (I did mine in my thermomix but you can use a double boiler) until just melted. Add in the drops of Easy Air (add less if you have babies in the house). Stir and pour into a glass jar with lid and leave to set. Apply a small amount to the chest as needed.

Easy Air is a great oil to have as part of your natural first aid kit as it can be used in so many ways and replace many other products you may get from the pharmacy.

Once you know, do better (I always come back to this quote in instances like this – always questioning and looking at other options). Now that I know better I want to educate others on making better choices when looking after ours and our family’s health. Don’t believe the marketing hype from the big brands.

I encourage you to make better choices for you and your family today and every day.

If you want to get started with your own oils, I would love to support you http://bit.ly/2tOy610
