Yesterday, I learnt that this week is Women’s Health Week. This week started in 2013 by Jean Hailes for Women’s Health after realising that there was no event dedicated to women’s health in Australia. Now, thousands of women across Australia sign up to take part in a week of online activities, videos, resources and information. 

The message for this week is ‘It’s time we put ourselves first’ – which is such an important message for women.

The two biggest barriers for women not maintaining a healthy lifestyle is ‘lack of time’ and ‘health not being a priority’.

Women’s Health Week is the time to put ourselves first, for just one week, and start making positive changes that can last a lifetime

We know women are leading busier lives than ever before and we have a tendency to let ourselves slip low on our priority lists. 

However, the health of those we love starts with us. By investing more time in ourselves, we are better able to look after the ones we love and care about. 

So, from 4 – 8 September, Women’s Health Week will have a new topic of focus each day:

  • Monday: Heart health
  • Tuesday: Mindfulness
  • Wednesday: Bone health
  • Thursday: Physical activity
  • Friday: Sleep and fatigue

There are a few of these topics that are of interest to me and I use my oils to support me in these areas so I thought I would share them with you in support of Women’s Health Week on the blog – starting today with Mindfulness.

If you google the definition of mindfulness, lots of different results will show up. I did a bit of research and liked the following definition from

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

In our busy lives it can be easy to lose touch with our body and be distracted by everything around us. When we are mindful we can reduce stress, enhance our performance, increase our attention to others and not be overwhelmed by what is going on around us. Paying more attention to the here and now – the present moment can help to improve your mental wellbeing.

You may associate mindfulness with meditation and that is because people often come across the term mindfulness when learning about meditation. It is used in many wellness practices, including yoga, meditation, aromatherapy and is a great practice for helping reduce stress and anxiety.

Using essential oils in your mindfulness practice is a great way to relieve stress and rejuvenate your mind and body and helping to improve your mental wellbeing.

Here are my favourite oils for assisting you in your mindfulness practice:


Incredibly calming and relaxing and very well known for these qualities makes Lavender ideal for mindfulness


This oil is very earthy and its unique and exotic aroma makes it ideal for mindfulness and meditation. It is known to provide a calming, grounding effect on our emotions as it is rich in sesquiterpenes.


This blend of oils promotes tranquillity while bringing harmony to the mind and body and balance to the emotions. The perfect blend to inhale and take some deeps breaths to bring you back to the present moment.


Frankincense is a holy oil and is believed to help you increase your faith and connection with spirit and helps to promote peace and overall wellness when used aromatically and topically.


This oil is perfect for calming and restoring your energy. It is a citrus oil so its aroma is also uplifting and refreshing, so it helps with depression, general fatigue and positive attitude. It is great for overall balance and produces calm, productive energy.


Cedarwood is a great oil to help you focus inward and can help return you to your spiritual path when obstacles have made it difficult.


This oil helps to open the heart and help to promote trust and is very helpful in emotional and spiritual healing – great to diffuse during mediation.
