Essential oils are widely known for their calming and relaxing properties and helping us to unwind after a long day at work but I often thing that their properties in stimulating our brains and helping us focus and concentrate on the job at hand are often underutilised and not as well recognised.
I use oils ALL THE TIME to help when I have writing to do or want to smash through my to-do list. Sometimes it is easy to get distracted and not get as much done and my oils are a great way to help me get the work done and remain focused.
There are certain essential oils that have an instant effect on brain activity. There are numerous studies where brain activity has been monitored via electroencephalograms. At times when you are struggling to concentrate or are feeling tired and sluggish or lacking focus, why not grab a bottle of essential oil rather than another cup of coffee or chocolate bar for a sugar fix. If you pick the right oils not only will they help you focus and concentrate but will also have an uplifting effect on your mood!
The olfactory epithelium inside our noses is directly connected to the emotional centre in our bran. This sensitive nerve bulb is what transmits the effects of a scent directly to our bran which allows an essential oil to have an almost instant effect when inhaled.
Here are my top 5 recommendations of oils to use for concentration and focus:
Rosemary essential oil
Rosemary's herbaceous and energizing scent is frequently used in aromatherapy and is a great brain stimulant (as well as being an immunity booster). This oil helps to maintain concentration while working or studying (use aromatically in a diffuser or simply inhale from the bottle and also helps to reduce occasional fatigue.
Basil essential oil
Basil is a great oil to have on hand to help relieve feelings of mental overload. It can be used to promote focus and alertness (also great to add flavour to cooking). Basil provides great benefits to both the mind and body due to its high linalool content, making it an ideal application to help reduce feelings of tension when applied to the temples and back of the neck.
Peppermint essential oil
One drop of peppermint is all you need (one drop of doTERRA peppermint oil is equivalent to 27 cups of peppermint tea – this shows how pure and potent doTERRA’s oils are – a little bit goes a long way. Peppermint is great for uplifting your mood and putting a pep in your step and great for helping you focus. Combine with Rosemary and Wild Orange in your diffuser for times when you need to focus.
Wild Orange essential oil
Wild Orange has many health benefits and an energizing aroma that can uplift the mind and body. High in monoterpenes, Wild Orange possesses stimulating and purifying qualities, and when added to your diffuser it can uplift mood and energy levels allowing for better focus and concentration. Combine with Frankincense and Peppermint for an energizing boost.
